CAÑO ISLAND BIOLOGICAL RESERVE

Located in the wonderful and blue Pacific Ocean, about 20 km (12 miles) off the coast of the Osa Peninsula in Drake Bay, Isla del Caño is an incredible Marine Biological Reserve in Costa Rica. Qualified as one of the best diving and snorkeling adventure points in the world, it is also home to a wide variety of fish, turtles, dolphins, whales and sharks.

Tips to travel to Drake Bay

The most recommended ways to get to Drake Bay are:

  • Boat from Sierpe. The boats leave from the Pearl of the South at 11.30am ($ 15) and at 3.30pm ($ 20) and it is not necessary to book in advance.
  • Plane from San José to Drake Bay (approx. $ 100 each way)
  • Car. In the rainy season, from May to December, access by car is not highly recommended.

Although there are two seasons, rainy and dry, the weather is very humid and it is always possible for a storm to fall, so we recommend that you bring light and easily dried clothes as well as a breathable raincoat.

In Drake Bay there is a basic health care clinic that works from 7am to 4pm and closed on weekends. There is no pharmacy, so we recommend you bring a medicine cabinet with the medications you may need.

In Drake Bay there are neither banks nor ATMs, try to take cash with you because when paying by credit card if you are not charged an extra commission.
